Volunteer opportunities to benefit the Tibetan community
Contact Volunteer Tibet (www.volunteertibet.org) to find out what organisations in the area need volunteers.
The best source of information on the latest volunteer opportunities is the monthly community newsletter called Contact - pick up a copy at one of the shops or restaurants in town.
You can also visit the Dharamsala
Earthville Institute (DEVI)
which publishes Contact and is located inside the Khana Nirvana
Café (above Stitches of Tibet). DEVI and the Café
offer help finding volunteer positions, lots of info on human rights
issues (particularly in Tibet), and delicious Western-style organic
vegetarian food! (Khana Nirvana Café and DEVI are closed
Saturdays.)
English tutors are probably the most sought after volunteers in McLeod
Ganj. Posters requesting tutors for individuals or small groups
are ever-present on the notice boards of McLeod Ganj. Gu-Chu-Sum
Organization of Ex-Political Prisoners also needs tutors and conversation partners for their English classes. Inquire at the Lung-Ta Japanese Restaurant.
Other centres that are often in need of volunteer assistance include
the Tibetan Welfare Office’s Environmental Project (help make
hand-made paper!), DEVI/Contact (need writers and proof-readers), and
the Tibetan
Women's Organisation.
MAY ALL BEINGS BE HAPPY!
